Definition
The Future Simple Tense is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future.
She will visit her grandmother tomorrow.
Structure Formation
🔹 Affirmative Form
Traditional Rule (British English)
- I / We + shall + base verb
- Other subjects + will + base verb
Examples:
- I shall learn a poem.
- He will leave for Italy.
Note: In modern English (especially American English), “will” is used with all subjects.
Correct modern usage:
I will learn a poem.
🔹 Negative Form
Subject + shall/will + not + base verb
Example:
- I shall not learn a lesson.
Short forms:
- will not = won’t
- shall not = shan’t (rare in modern English)
🔹 Interrogative Form
Shall/Will + subject + base verb?
Example:
- Shall I learn a poem?
🔹 Negative Interrogative Form
Shall/Will + subject + not + base verb?
Example:
- Shall I not learn a poem?
🔹 Wh-Question Form
Question Word + shall/will + subject + base verb?
Wh-words include: what, when, where, why, who, how, etc.
Example:
- When shall I learn a poem?
Important Exam Notes
✔ After will/shall, always use base form (V1).
❌ Wrong: He will goes.
✅ Correct: He will go.
✔ “Shall” is mostly used with I and we in formal or traditional English.
✔ In competitive exams, “will” is safer for all subjects.
Uses of Future Simple
1️⃣ Prediction (Opinion about Future)
Used when we predict something based on opinion or belief.
- I think England will win the match.
- She believes he will pass the exam.
Often used with: think, believe, expect, hope
2️⃣ Future Facts
Used for facts that will happen in the future.
- I shall be twenty next Saturday.
- The sun will rise at 6 a.m. tomorrow.
3️⃣ Promises, Offers, Decisions (Very Important for Exams)
- I will help you. (promise)
- I will carry your bag. (offer)
- Okay, I will do it. (instant decision)
With Certain Expressions

Example:
James will reach here soon.
🔹 Fixed Expressions
- I am sure
- I am afraid
Examples:
- I am sure it will rain today.
- I am afraid she will miss the train.
Common Mistakes in Future Simple
❌ I will call you when he will arrive.
✅ I will call you when he arrives.
❌ After she will finish her work, she will call you.
✅ After she finishes her work, she will call you.
❌ Unless you will study, you will fail.
✅ Unless you study, you will fail.
❌ By the time he will come, I will have left.
✅ By the time he comes, I will have left.
